  • Commissioners to meet on Tuesday

    Surry, Davie, Stokes and Yadkin counties are applying for transportation assistance funds from the state for 2011. Randy Bledsoe, Elkin City Schools superintendent, will present bids to the commissioners for the next phase of the Elkin High School construction project. The funding request from the school system for phase III of the project is $1.6 million.

Innkeeper Alton Ballance of Crews Inn Bed and Breakfast said about 11/2 feet of water stood in his backyard, but he'd seen little structural damage. By 9:15 a.m., the water was lapping at the bottom step to her home.

    Child nutrition directors can expose students to the many fruits and vegetables grown in North Carolina and provide nutritional meals. "It's seasonal produce, so it's very fresh. We're also going back to cooking things like fresh collard greens. The Farm to School program in North Carolina provides watermelon, cantaloupes, tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, potatoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cabbage, collards, lettuce, squash, zucchini, strawberries and blueberries.
  • Highway cleanup to start in September

    Over the course of last year's Fall Litter Sweep, volunteers helped remove 1.7 million pounds of litter from North Carolina roadsides. Additional department employees are assigned to this task for the two-week Litter Sweep. Last fall, Richmond County collected 453 bags of trash during the two weeks of the sweep. Bags, vests and gloves can be obtained from the county maintenance office.
  • Hurricane clears out; crews scramble to open Outer Banks highway

    Mandatory evacuation orders were rescinded at daybreak for Carteret County beaches, such as Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach. Meteorologists predicted Earl would reach peak strength early Thursday and lose some power as it neared the Outer Banks. They also forecast a turn to the northeast, shortly before Earl reached Cape Hatteras.

Outbound or destination to home services will continue unless gale force winds prohibit operations.
